EntSun News/11091823
~ The Copley Plaza Hotel, a historic landmark in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, has been officially designated as a Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC). The hotel, which first opened its doors in 1912, has been an iconic part of the city for over 110 years and holds significant historical importance within the hospitality industry.

Designed by renowned architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the Copley Plaza Hotel is a palazzo made of pale brick and rusticated limestone blocks. It stands as a character-defining element of Copley Square, along with other notable buildings such as the Boston Public Library and Trinity Church.

Not only is the exterior of the hotel architecturally significant, but its interior is also a masterpiece. The first floor boasts a complex layout and intricate decorative finishes including mosaic, marble, plasterwork, painted murals, and other architectural details. In the 1970s, efforts were made to restore many original features using historic photographs and original floor plans.

The hotel has played host to numerous notable events and guests throughout its history. From American presidents to foreign dignitaries and entertainment celebrities, it has been a popular destination for both locals and visitors alike. Its grand ballroom and lobby are just some of the interior spaces that have been designated as significant under the proposed Landmark designation.

In March 2026, after receiving public comments in support of preserving the hotel as a Landmark, the BLC held a public hearing where they agreed with staff recommendations to designate it as such under Chapter 772. This decision was subsequently approved by both the Mayor on March 31st and City Council on April 29th of that year.

As a result of this designation, any proposed alterations to the exterior envelope of the building will now require review by BLC or Commission staff. This ensures that this historic landmark will be preserved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

In conclusion, the Copley Plaza Hotel holds a special place in the hearts of Bostonians and is a significant part of the city's history. Its designation as a Landmark by the BLC solidifies its importance and ensures that it will continue to be a cherished landmark for years to come. This article was prepared by Jennifer Gaugler, an architectural historian who has extensively studied and documented the hotel's historical significance.
