~ Boston City Council Passes Resolutions Celebrating Teachers and Nurses
The Boston City Council has recently passed two resolutions, recognizing the hard work and dedication of two essential groups: teachers and nurses. The resolutions, offered by Councilors FitzGerald and Murphy with Councilor Weber joining on the teachers' resolution, aim to honor these professionals during their respective national observances.
One of the resolutions acknowledges National Teacher Appreciation Week, which is held from May 5 through May 9. This week is a time to celebrate and recognize the nearly 4,300 teachers within Boston's public schools, as well as educators in charter schools, private schools, and daycare centers across the city. Teachers play a crucial role in shaping the future of Boston by nurturing young minds and inspiring future leaders. In addition to teaching academic subjects, many teachers also serve as mentors, counselors, and role models for their students.
The majority of Boston's teaching workforce consists of women, and the City recognizes the unique challenges they face. These dedicated professionals often go above and beyond to meet their students' academic and emotional needs. The City encourages everyone - students, parents, and administrators - to take time this week to show gratitude for the important work that teachers do every day.

The second resolution declares May 6 through May 12 as National Nurses Week. This week aims to recognize the vital contributions of more than 64,000 registered nurses who work throughout Greater Boston. Nurses are considered the backbone of our healthcare system as they provide critical care, offer emotional support, and often serve as advocates for patients and their families. With projections showing an increasing demand for nurses in the coming years, this resolution highlights their importance in keeping Boston healthy.
The resolution also acknowledges the challenges faced by nurses such as understaffing and working in high-pressure environments. The Council reaffirms its commitment to supporting nurses by ensuring they receive the necessary resources, recognition, and respect they deserve for their dedication and sacrifice.
