Boston: Council Declares May as Small Business Month
EntSun News/11058619
~ During the latest Council meeting, held this week, the Council officially declared May as Small Business Month. This recognition aims to highlight and celebrate the significant contributions of over 44,000 small businesses that serve as the backbone of Boston's neighborhoods.
From the bustling storefronts along Blue Hill Avenue to the vibrant shops in Fields Corner, small businesses play a crucial role in shaping Boston's cultural identity. Not only do they add character to the city, but they also create one in every five jobs citywide. Nationally, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses, and Boston's local enterprises are no exception. They provide essential services, employment opportunities, and serve as community anchors throughout the city.
The resolution was proposed by Councilor Worrell and co-sponsored by Councilors Weber and Mejia. It also acknowledges the unique challenges faced by Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs). A recent City Disparity Study conducted in 2022 revealed systemic barriers that hinder MWBEs from accessing city contracts and capital. In response to this issue, the Council has taken steps to expand procurement goals and implement new policies aimed at promoting more equitable access to city resources.

Boston continues to show its support for small business growth through various initiatives such as grant programs, multilingual licensing support, pop-up markets, and dedicated resources for both legacy and first-time entrepreneurs. However, despite these efforts, a recent report by the Institute for Justice highlighted that there is still more work to be done. The report noted that low-income and MWBE business owners face disproportionate challenges due to red tape and high costs.
As Small Business Month kicks off in Boston, the Council reaffirms its commitment to building an inclusive local economy where every entrepreneur has an equal opportunity for success. By recognizing and addressing these challenges faced by small businesses, Boston aims to create a thriving environment for all entrepreneurs in the city.
