~ Boston Tax Help Coalition Celebrates 25 Years of Providing Free Tax Preparation to Residents
For the past 25 years, the Boston Tax Help Coalition has been dedicated to providing free tax preparation services to residents of Boston. This year, despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, the coalition continued its mission and successfully completed the 2026 tax season.
With over 30 tax sites spread throughout the city, more than 330 volunteers worked tirelessly to file over 11,000 returns. As a result, a total of $22 million in refunds was returned directly to communities in need.
One resident who benefited from this service is Sonia R., who filed her taxes in person at Chinatown Main Streets. She expressed her gratitude for the impact it had on her family, as her refund will help support her son's college education this fall. In addition to financial relief, taxpayers also saved over $3 million in filing fees this year alone.
But the coalition's efforts did not stop at just providing free tax preparation. Six tax sites also offered Financial Check-Ups (FCU), which were free 15-minute sessions aimed at helping residents understand their credit and improve their financial stability. This season saw an expansion of the program with four new coalition members joining in: Boston Housing Authority-Charlestown, Community Economic Development Center, Codman Square Health Center, and DotHouse Health. These organizations joined Urban Edge and the Center for Working Families in offering FCU sessions as a way to connect with existing and potential financial coaching clients.

The coalition also made sure to reach out to residents with disabilities through their Disability Ambassador Lynn Dann. Through visits to nine different organizations during February and March, Dann was able to reach over 134 community members. The Free Tax Preparation for the Boston Disability Community initiative, a nine-year partnership with DEAF Inc., provided accessible services for deaf and hard-of-hearing residents. This resulted in 887 completed returns and 64 additional referrals to community filing organizations.
Looking ahead to the 2027 tax season, the Boston Tax Help Coalition remains committed to serving the residents of Boston for many more years to come. For those in need of help with an amended return or a prior year, appointments are still available at some tax sites through October 2025. More information can be found at boston.gov/tax-sites. Additionally, Bostonians interested in further financial literacy programs and resources can visit boston.gov/working-families.
