Bloomington Public Works Earns National Accreditation with 100% Compliance

~ Bloomington, Indiana - The City of Bloomington Department of Public Works has been awarded full accreditation by the American Public Works Association (APWA). After a thorough evaluation, the department was found to be 100 percent compliant with all management practices applied to its operations.

This prestigious designation makes Bloomington only the second APWA-accredited public works agency in Indiana, joining Fishers. The accreditation will remain valid through July 30, 2030.

According to Public Works Director Adam Wason, achieving this accreditation was no easy feat. "This took years of work, honest evaluation, and a lot of people pulling in the same direction," he stated. "Our staff proved that the way we serve Bloomington meets the highest standards in the profession. I'm incredibly proud of this team and grateful to everyone across the City who helped get us here."

In order to receive initial accreditation from APWA, agencies must achieve full compliance with at least 95% of all applicable practices and substantial compliance with the remainder. However, Bloomington went above and beyond by achieving full compliance with 100% of the applicable practices.

The process for accreditation includes a self-assessment where agencies compare their policies, procedures, and operations with APWA's recommended management practices. Once an agency formally commits to the program, staff work towards addressing any gaps identified during the self-assessment. APWA evaluators then review documentation, interview employees, and examine operations before making their final determination.

The accreditation evaluates various management systems that support public works services such as planning, financial management, employee training, safety measures, emergency response protocols, communication strategies, facilities maintenance and equipment management.

For residents of Bloomington, this accreditation provides an independent measure of how their city's public resources are managed and how essential services are delivered. The process also requires agencies to establish clear procedures and assign responsibility while documenting decisions and maintaining systems that support consistent service.

APWA grants accreditation for four years and requires agencies to submit a midterm report two years after accreditation. This report must identify any organizational changes, document improvements, and demonstrate continued compliance. Bloomington will have to complete the re-accreditation process before the current designation expires on July 20, 2030.
