Beware of Fake City of Spokane Development and Permit Invoices
EntSun News/11094995
~ Spokane, WA - The City of Spokane Development Services Center (DSC) has issued a warning to customers about fraudulent emails that appear to be coming from City staff. According to Erin Hut, the Communications Director for the City, these emails falsely claim to be related to permit, planning, and/or development applications and may request payment through wire transfer instructions.
Hut stated that the City will never request payment through email and urged customers to be cautious when receiving such requests. These fraudulent emails may use the names of actual City employees and reference real projects, addresses, or permit applications. They may also include invoices or payment requests and instruct recipients to make payments through wire transfers.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, customers are advised to verify that the email is coming from an official City of Spokane email address ending in @spokanecity.org. They should also carefully review the sender's email address and not just the display name. If uncertain about the legitimacy of a message, customers are advised not to click on any links or open attachments or provide financial information.
