At 70, Los Angeles Founder Offers Holiday Gifts That Make Everyday Tasks Easier

LOS ANGELES - EntSun -- Every holiday season, families hear the same answer when they ask older parents what they want: "Oh, I don't need anything." Jonine Scott, the 70-year-old founder of Luna Select Market, says the better question is what has gotten harder at home.

"Nobody needs another sweater," said Scott. "But a jar that opens, a light that comes on by itself at night, a can opener you don't have to crank? Those get used every day."

Scott started Luna Select Market in 2026, at 70, while recovering from severe nerve damage. Ordinary tasks like opening a jar or scrubbing the tub became harder. She began keeping a list of the small, practical tools that helped, and that list became the store.

Its "Easy on the Hands" collection gathers products that cut down on gripping, twisting, bending, and reaching. Gift picks include:

• Under-Cabinet Jar Opener ($10.99): stuck lids open with one hand
• Motion Sensor Under-Cabinet Light ($27.99): turns on by itself for nighttime trips, with no wiring
• Clip-On Bedside Shelf ($27.99): keeps glasses, phone, and a book within reach
• One-Touch Electric Can Opener ($34.99): cordless, with one button
• Spin Scrubber with Extendable Handle ($39.99): scrub the tub standing up
• Fingerprint Keyless Entry Deadbolt ($49.99): no fumbling for keys
• Easy Grip Kitchen Tools Set ($74.99): kitchen helpers for the family cook

Tips for Shopping for Older Parents

• Watch a regular day. Holiday visits are a good time to notice what's getting harder, like a stiff lid or a dark hallway.
• Keep it simple. The best helpers work with one button, one hand, or no setup.
• Pair practical with cozy. A jar opener and a soft throw together say "I noticed" and "I care."

"A lot of people my age don't want a gadget that says they're getting old," Scott said. "Give them something that just makes the day go smoother. Nobody minds that. Every product I carry has to pass one test: does it make life at home a little easier?"
