Artist Applications Open for Downtown Bloomington Traffic Box Project

~ Downtown Bloomington, Inc. (DBI) and the City of Bloomington have announced a new opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents in the heart of downtown. The organizations are seeking individual artists or artist teams to design and paint a traffic box at the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and Rogers Street.

The project, funded by Downtown Bloomington, Inc., includes a $750 artist honorarium and up to $500 for materials and supplies. Interested artists are invited to respond to a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) by submitting examples of their past work and relevant experience. This will allow a jury to select the most suitable artist for the project before any design work begins. The deadline to apply is September 13, 2026.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the City of Bloomington and Downtown Bloomington, Inc. to bring public art projects and performances to downtown using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. These funds have already supported various projects such as murals, public performances, events, and the repainting of over 10 traffic boxes throughout downtown.

The chosen artist or team will be responsible for designing a traffic box that visually represents Bloomington's native flowers, nature, or wildlife. Prior experience with public art installations is not required.

A selection panel will review all applications and choose the artist or team who will then develop a design for the traffic box. This particular box is part of a larger capital project that involves relocating it within the intersection. Once this project is complete, the selected artist will be asked to paint the box.
