45 Years of Friendship: Idaho Falls Welcomes Tokai-Mura Youth Delegates

~ Idaho Falls, ID - The City of Idaho Falls is excited to welcome a group of youth delegates from Tokai-Mura, Japan for a 10-day Sister Cities exchange. This program aims to introduce the students, aged 12 to 18, to the unique people, places, and experiences of eastern Idaho.

The delegation, consisting of 15 students and three chaperones, arrived in Idaho Falls this afternoon and will depart on Monday, August 3rd. As part of their visit, the students will participate in various activities and attractions throughout the city. On Friday, July 24th, they will have the opportunity to meet with Mayor Lisa Burtenshaw and visit the law enforcement complex. They will also tour the Sister Cities display at the Idaho Falls Public Library and explore popular local destinations such as the Idaho Falls Zoo, Funland, and indoor pickleball courts at Tautphaus Park.

During their stay in Idaho Falls, the students will be hosted by local families and have a chance to experience a wide range of cultural activities. Their itinerary includes visits to Yellowstone National Park and West Yellowstone, as well as educational trips to places like the INL (Idaho National Laboratory), local schools, Lagoon amusement park, Museum of Idaho, and College of Eastern Idaho's new building. They will also get to attend the War Bonnet Round Up rodeo and spend a day in Island Park.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Sister Cities program between Idaho Falls and Tokai-Mura. Since its establishment in 1981, this partnership has fostered strong cultural, educational, economic, and personal relationships between residents of both cities. Through annual exchanges facilitated by both adult and youth associations within the program, Japanese youth visit Idaho Falls while adults from Idaho Falls travel to Japan. These exchanges help build relationships and promote cultural understanding across generations.

Laura Combs, president of the Idaho Falls Sister Cities Youth program, expressed her excitement for the upcoming exchange. "It's amazing to see our home community through an exchange student's eyes. Something we find routine, they find surprising," she said. "Our homes, climate, geography, and languages may be different, but hospitality is a universal language. This program creates lifelong friendships and understanding."
