Two Decades, One Track Partner: Mondo Again Chosen for Icahn Stadium

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - EntSun -- As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, Icahn Stadium is resurfacing its track, and once again, choosing Mondo.

Located on Randall's Island Park in New York City, Icahn Stadium has long been a magnet for prestigious competitions with elite athletes. The Randall's Island Park Alliance (RIPA), established in 1992, has been responsible for maintaining and updating Icahn Stadium since its construction in 2005. The installation of Mondo's Super X 720 track surface, now underway and scheduled for completion this fall, signals RIPA's continued commitment to innovation and sustainability, as well as hosting high-level track meets: the stadium is slated for World Athletics Class I certification, and once certified, it will be one of only four outdoor venues in the United States to have Class I certification and be eligible to host world-class competitions.

"We have been working with Mondo since Icahn Stadium opened 20 years ago, which made selecting them for the construction of our new track a no-brainer," said Louis Vazquez, director of operations of Icahn Stadium. "Throughout the years, Icahn has seen some of the fastest times across a variety of track and field competitions, making it a destination for athletes all over the country. Mondo's track record has proven itself time and time again, and we are looking forward to continuing our partnership with more records being set here at Icahn on this new surface."

Mondo's Super X 720 vulcanized rubber track surface provides the perfect combination of shock absorption, vertical deformation, and energy return for optimal athletic performance.

RIPA first partnered with Mondo in 2005, installing the company's Super X Performance track when Icahn Stadium was built to replace Downing Stadium. That track set the stage for historic moments, including two world records: Meseret Defar's in the women's 5,000m in 2006, and Usain Bolt's in the men's 100m in 2008. Bolt's electrifying 9.72-second sprint at the Reebok Grand Prix still ranks third on the World Athletics men's 100m record progression.

More than 200,000 athletes have competed on the Mondo surface at Icahn Stadium, and each year, the facility hosts upward of 60 meets. Major events held at Icahn Stadium include Grand Prix meets sponsored by Reebok and adidas; NCAA regional and Big East Conference championships; national competitions, such as the USATF National Youth Outdoor Championships and Junior Olympics; and last year's inaugural Athlos 2024—a pioneering all-female track and field showcase featuring world-class athletes.

The first event expected to take place on the new Super X 720 track is Athlos 2025 in October, with renowned athletes, such as Gabby Thomas, Tara Davis-Woodhall, and Masai Russell, anticipated to compete.
