The Frost Place Announces 2024 Dartmouth Poet-in-Residence Aurielle Marie
EntSun News/11029025
FRANCONIA, N.H. - EntSun -- The Frost Place is pleased to announce this year's Poet-in-Residence, Aurielle Marie. Award winning poet, essayist, and cultural strategist, Marie is the Georgia-based author of Gumbo Ya Ya (2021, University of Pittsburgh Press), which won the 2020 Cave Canem Poetry Prize and the 2022 Lambda Literary Award for Bisexual Poetry. Gumbo Ya Ya was the finalist for the 2023 Kate Tufts Discovery Award and received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Library Journal.
Marie has been published widely as both an essayist and poet, including in Teen Vogue, Poetry, Poem-a-Day, The Guardian, ESSENCE, Adroit, and on the U.S. Poet Laureate podcast, The Slowdown. For her work in literature, she was named one of the 2022 Out100 and was featured on Good Morning America. Marie is currently working on a feature-length documentary, a novel, and an essay collection. Her work has been covered by The Seattle Times, Poets & Writers, NBC, CNN, Black Women Radical, Allure magazine, and many more.

The final selection for this year's resident poet was made by Professor Vievee Francis of Dartmouth College. Francis, Dartmouth Liaison for The Frost Place, had this to say of the winner: "Aurielle Marie's technically adept, gorgeously unabashed work is thrilling to read and hear. Marie does not shy away from difficult discourses of race, gender, sexuality, as well as interrogations of equitability. However, Marie's complex and insistent work is also imbued with care, tenderness, even sweetness. There is a fullness that refuses to minimize circumstance or feeling. We are drawn in by initially familiar language and phrases and are then struck by the strange and unexpected. 'There goes a Black girl body still/tethered to her head.' This is brave and admirable poetry. Marie brings thrilling authenticity girded by a rich poetic capacity."
The public is invited to join Aurielle Marie at area readings in July, including at The Frost Place's Robert Frost Day celebration on Sunday, July 7 at 3pm; Abbie Greenleaf Library on Thursday, July 11 at 7pm; Dartmouth College on Wednesday, July 24 at 5:30pm; and St. Johnsbury Athenaeum on Sunday, July 28 at 4pm.
