The City of Boston and Fenway Forward Celebrate the Grand Opening of 43 Hemenway Street

~ The Mayor's Office of Housing, along with Fenway Forward, community partners, and residents, gathered today to celebrate the grand opening of 43 Hemenway Street. This newly renovated development in the Fenway neighborhood consists of six affordable homeownership units and was made possible through funding from the Mayor's Office of Housing.

Chief of Housing Sheila A. Dillon expressed her pleasure in being a part of this project that will provide new homeownership opportunities for Boston residents. She also acknowledged the partnership between the Mayor's Office of Housing and Fenway Forward, highlighting their shared commitment to stabilizing downtown neighborhoods.

Located in one of Boston's most walkable and transit-oriented areas, these first-time homebuyers will have easy access to amenities such as the Emerald Necklace park system, Boston Symphony Hall, and a grocery store. The restored building offers a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and three-bedroom homes with renovated kitchens and bathrooms, hardwood floors, air conditioning, and other improvements while maintaining its historic charm. These homes were priced for income-qualified households earning up to 80% and 100% of Area Median Income (AMI).

Executive Director Steven Farrell of Fenway Forward expressed his excitement for these new affordable homeownership opportunities in the neighborhood. He noted that this project represents a 33% increase in such opportunities and thanked all project partners who share their mission of providing homeownership options for all income levels.

The Boston Home Center played a crucial role in supporting the developer and first-time homebuyers through the unit sales process by providing marketing services and technical assistance. To be eligible for these units, buyers must be first-time homebuyers who will use the property as their primary residence. They must also meet income and asset requirements, complete an approved homebuyer education course before closing, and be Boston residents.

Under Mayor Michelle Wu's leadership, Boston has seen significant progress in expanding income-restricted homeownership opportunities. From 2022 to 2025, over 1,000 income-restricted units were completed or under construction, the highest number in 27 years. In 2025 alone, the City completed 265 new income-restricted homeownership units, the most in over a decade. These efforts are creating more pathways to affordable homeownership for Boston residents and promoting housing stability and financial security for families.

Since Mayor Wu's first term, the City has produced or begun construction on over 18,000 new homes, including thousands of income-restricted units. The Mayor has implemented policies to make it easier, faster, and less expensive to build housing in all neighborhoods.

Furthermore, Mayor Wu has directed record levels of investment towards expanding affordable homeownership and supporting renters and homeowners facing housing instability. Through initiatives like the Housing Accelerator Fund, Welcome Home Boston, and Housing with Public Assets program, the City is finding innovative ways to create housing on public land, convert vacant buildings into homes, and help residents build wealth and stability. The Mayor's focus on climate and health has also positioned Boston as a national leader in green and energy-efficient housing.

Overall, these efforts are working towards making Boston a city where every resident can have a safe, stable, and affordable home. By creating more opportunities for affordable homeownership and investing in housing stability for all residents, the City is building stronger communities for generations to come.
