Texas: Governor Abbott Signs Key Border Security Laws In Fort Worth

~ At the Sheriff's Association of Texas 147th Annual Training, Governor Greg Abbott ceremonially signed two bills, Senate Bill 8 and Senate Bill 36, to strengthen Texas' coordinated border security efforts with the federal government. The bill signing was followed by a fireside chat between Governor Abbott and U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan to discuss the successful collaboration between Texas and the federal government in securing the border.

During the bill signing ceremony, Governor Abbott expressed his goal of making Texas a safer state by establishing the Homeland Security Division within the Texas Department of Public Safety. This division will consolidate the Border Security Operations Center and Joint Operations and Intelligence Centers, expanding their operational scope. The Governor also praised President Donald J. Trump's efforts in arresting, jailing, and deporting illegal immigrants across Texas and America.

Governor Abbott highlighted the partnership between Texas and the Trump Administration in strengthening homeland security. He noted that these new laws will empower Texas to have a more secure border by enhancing its response to threats from foreign nations.

Following the bill signing ceremony, Governor Abbott and Border Czar Homan participated in a fireside chat moderated by Goliad County Sheriff Roy Boyd on disaster response and border security operations in Texas. The Governor emphasized that during the upcoming special session, strengthening early warning systems and emergency response communication will be a top priority for Texas. He also commended first responders for their bravery in saving Texans from floodwaters during recent disasters.

Governor Abbott also discussed Operation Lone Star, which has served as a blueprint for the Trump Administration's efforts to protect our nation from illegal immigration threats. He assured that Texas will continue to work with Mr. Homan's team to eliminate dangerous terrorist organizations and criminals from our state.

The Governor praised the courage and dedication of Texas sheriffs in disaster response, Operation Lone Star, and everyday policing to keep Texans safe. He was joined at the bill signing ceremony by several state and local officials, including Senators Brian Birdwell, Joan Huffman, and Tan Parker; Representatives David Cook, Cole Hefner, Mitch Little, AJ Louderback, Jared Patterson, Katrina Pierson, Nate Schatzline, David Spiller, and Tony Tinderholt; Franklin County Sheriff Ricky Jones; and law enforcement personnel.

Senate Bill 8 (Schwertner/Spiller) requires the sheriff of each county that operates a jail or contracts with a private vendor to enforce federal immigration law to enter into a written agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This agreement is also known as a 287(g) agreement.

Senate Bill 36 (Parker/Hefner) establishes the Homeland Security Division within the Texas Department of Public Safety to lead multi-agency efforts in enhancing law enforcement initiatives and operations for homeland security objectives in Texas.

Governor Abbott's participation in the fireside chat with U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan highlights the successful collaboration between Texas and the federal government in securing our border.
