Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints Five To State Commission On Judicial Conduct

~ Governor Greg Abbott has recently made appointments to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, selecting five individuals to serve on the commission. These appointments include April Aguirre and Derek Cohen, Ph.D., whose terms will expire on December 31, 2029, as well as Andrew "Andy" Kahan, Tracy Harrison, and Yinon Weiss, whose terms will expire on December 31, 2031.
The State Commission on Judicial Conduct is responsible for regulating the conduct of the state judiciary. This includes the power to recommend retirement, censure, suspension, or removal of a judge from office. With these new appointments, Governor Abbott is ensuring that the commission is equipped with experienced and knowledgeable individuals.
April Aguirre of Pasadena brings a unique perspective to the commission as a crime victims' advocate for Voice for Victims and a nurse. She received her nurse training while serving in the U.S. Air Force and holds an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from Houston City College (formerly known as Houston Community College) and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston – Downtown.
Derek Cohen, Ph.D., who resides in Austin, has been appointed as well. He currently serves as the chief policy and research officer for the Texas Public Policy Foundation and previously worked as an adjunct professor and research associate at the University of Cincinnati. Cohen also has experience coaching youth rugby for the Austin Huns Rugby Club and serving on various boards such as America's Future Foundation – Austin Chapter. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Bowling Green State University and both a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Doctor of Philosophy in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati.

Andrew "Andy" Kahan is another notable appointment to the commission. Kahan currently serves as director of Victim Services for Crime Stoppers Houston and has an extensive background in advocating for crime victims. He has served on numerous boards such as Parents of Murdered Children and Surviving Family Members of Homicide, and is a former member of the Crime Victims' Institute Advisory Council. Kahan was also the first victim advocate to be staffed out of the Mayor's Office and has served under five mayoral administrations. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston.
Tracy Harrison, who resides in Friendswood, brings a wealth of experience to the commission as well. She currently serves as vice president of public safety for the North Houston District, Local City Municipality Management District. Harrison is also a member of various organizations such as the International City Managers Association and the Woman Marines Association. She has also volunteered for organizations such as Special Olympics and the Houston NFL Superbowl. Harrison served in the U.S. Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge. She holds a Master of Public Service and Administration from Texas A&M University.
Lastly, Yinon Weiss has been appointed to serve on the commission. Weiss is currently CEO of Stress-Free Auto Care and has previously served as CEO and founder of CarDash and RallyPoint. He is also an investor and advisor to technology startups. Weiss is an alumnus of Presidential Leadership Scholars and Y Combinator, as well as a former board member of Harvard Veterans Alumni Organization and co-president of Harvard Armed Forces Alumni Association. He has served in multiple branches of the military including the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army Special Forces, and U.S. Army Reserves, earning numerous awards for his service including Combat Infantryman Badge, Combat Action Ribbon, Special Forces Tab, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal. Weiss holds a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
