Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Power House Data Centers, CoreWeave And Emergent Data Centers Commit To Comply With His Data Centers Standards
EntSun News/11100140
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that three major data centers in Texas have agreed to comply with the standards and guidelines he established for data centers. These companies include Power House Data Centers, CoreWeave, and Emergent Data Centers.
According to Governor Abbott, these guidelines and guardrails are proving to be effective as they are being universally implemented by data centers across the state. In fact, one data center that was unable to comply with the standards chose to end operations before even beginning construction.
The Governor emphasized the importance of these regulations in protecting Texas' electric grid, conserving water resources, respecting neighborhoods, and ensuring that data centers do not pass on costs to Texas families or interfere with their quality of life. He stated, "I established clear guardrails to ensure data centers protect our electric grid, conserve our water, respect our neighborhoods, and pay their own way."

Earlier this summer, Governor Abbott directed the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to establish statewide standards for data center development. These standards require data centers to pay for their own electric infrastructure instead of shifting costs onto families and small businesses. They must also reuse their own water and reduce electricity costs for Texans.
Furthermore, these regulations prohibit data centers from disrupting residential neighborhoods in order to preserve the quality of life in Texas. They also aim to eliminate reliance on outdated taxpayer-funded incentives by requiring data centers to pay their own way.
In addition to these guidelines, the PUCT and ERCOT will thoroughly examine each data center project before it can move forward. This includes disclosing all taxpayer-funded incentives and grants tied to the project, providing their own power through on-site generation or other measures, protecting water resources by implementing efficient cooling technologies, and outlining measures to reduce impacts on neighboring communities.

Governor Abbott stressed the importance of transparency in this process stating that "the PUCT and ERCOT cannot make decisions to guarantee grid stability and reliability based on substantially incomplete information." Any data center company that fails to comply with the audit process will have their approval denied.
Since these directives were issued, data centers across the state have either announced their full compliance or have chosen to end their projects. Governor Abbott believes that these standards provide necessary guardrails to protect Texas communities.
In conclusion, Governor Abbott's guidelines and guardrails for data centers are proving to be effective in ensuring responsible and sustainable development in Texas. With the cooperation of major data center companies, the state is taking steps towards protecting its resources and preserving the quality of life for its residents.
