Tacoma: Applications Now Being Accepted for three Positions on the Urban Design Board

* One Development and Design Professional ~ The Tacoma City Council is currently on the lookout for three individuals to join the Urban Design Board. The board is responsible for providing guidance and making final design decisions for specific Urban Design Project Review permits, as well as offering advisory input to the city on urban design matters.
According to the press release, there are three positions available on the board: one for a Development and Design Professional and two for Allied Community Representatives. The Development and Design Professional should have professional experience in fields such as architecture, landscape architecture, planning, urban design, land use or real estate law, real estate development, construction or building trades, or civil or structural engineering. On the other hand, the Allied Community Representatives should have lived and/or professional experience and/or training relevant to either active/multimodal transportation or culture and heritage. Their expertise can come from various fields including transit agency administration, transportation planner or engineer, artisan/craftsperson, historian, architectural history professional, or cultural organization administrator.

While preference will be given to Tacoma residents for these positions, up to two board members may reside outside of Tacoma. However, two of the seven positions must reside and/or conduct business primarily in Council Districts Three, Four, or Five.
The Urban Design Board plays a crucial role in the all-new Urban Design Project Review process established by the Tacoma City Council in 2024. The board meets on the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Their responsibilities include providing early concept design guidance and making final design decisions for specific Urban Design Project Review permits. They also serve as an educational resource and advocate for design excellence in the community by offering advisory input to the city on urban design matters.
The city is committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within its committees, boards, and commissions. Therefore, all individuals are encouraged to apply for these vacancies regardless of their race/ethnicity (BIPOC), sexual orientation (LGBTQ+), disabilities, age (seniors or youth), immigration status (immigrants or refugees), or any other marginalized identities. The city aims to have its committees, boards, and commissions reflect the diverse community of Tacoma.

Applicants who are appointed to the Urban Design Board will be required to complete Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act trainings provided by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General within 90 days of their appointment.
