Sunday Friends collaborates with Adobe to create change

Sunday Friends empowers very low-income families to break the generational cycle of poverty. Children and their parents work together to develop the life skills needed to graduate from poverty into opportunity.
SAN JOSE, Calif. - EntSun -- Sunday Friends, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit teamed up with Adobe's San Jose Action Team to create positive change and impactful opportunities last week.
For over 22 years, Sunday Friends, a recipient of YMCA Project Cornerstone 2019 Asset Champion Award, has supported over 10,000 children and parents with programs funded mostly by individual donors and grants and run in collaboration with hundreds of local community organizations. Collectively, we take pride in our operating model: "the working alternative to charity". "We don't believe in handouts; instead we provide opportunities to serve, to learn, and to earn," said James McCaskill, Executive Director of Sunday Friends.
On a typical Sunday, children and parents come to work together to contribute to the community, learn practical life skills, and earn basic necessities. We emphasize family engagement to build parenting effectiveness and to strengthen youths' sense of self-worth, their foundation of being loved and valued, and their dedication to being contributing members of society.

On October 18, 2019, Adobe employees in San Jose collaborated with Sunday Friends to build take-home STEAM learning kits that will allow Sunday Friends' children to continue learning in the home and get their parents involved with their children. This event included a Balloon Racer Kit assembly where volunteers worked in an assembly line at various stations to decorate the bag, cut cardboard chassis, stick & straw axel sets with instructions, wheels and straws to assemble the kits. This take-home project fosters science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) concepts such as thrust, kinetic energy, Newton's Laws of Motion.
Sunday Friends recognizes that children who have positive experiences with STEAM are more likely to apply themselves to learning STEAM in school, which may lead to successful careers that build on STEAM. By combining play with STEAM activities in each program, Sunday Friends sends learning activities home with our families such as math learning games and STEAM activities and more. Sunday Friends believes in family-centered learning that continues in the homes during the week. Families reported in our program evaluation that they spend more time sharing meaningful activities with their children without the TV on, thanks to Sunday Friends.
