Sterling Heights: Soak Up Spring this April with #MYSHPR

~ As spring approaches, the Sterling Heights Parks & Recreation department is gearing up for a month full of exciting events and activities. From fitness classes to outdoor adventures, there is something for everyone to enjoy this April.

To kick off the month, the Parks & Recreation facilities, including the Community Center, Senior Center, and Nature Center, will be closed from April 3-5. Normal operations will resume on Monday, April 6.

For those looking to get active and learn a new skill, adult karate classes will be held every Tuesday from April 7 to May 19 at 6:30 p.m. Participants can register online and learn the fundamentals of karate from a black belt instructor while also getting a cardio boost.

On Friday, April 10 at 6 p.m., the Adaptive Dance: Let's Glow Crazy event will take place. This glow party is open to participants ages 16 and older with cognitive or physical impairments and their caregivers. Attendees can enjoy pizza and beverages while dancing under neon lights.

For those with a creative side, the Artist Inside class on Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. will feature Bunnies in the Brush. This class is open to all ages and abilities and will provide an opportunity for participants to explore new techniques and create their own masterpiece while enjoying themed treats.

Teenagers can also join in on the fun with Teen Night Out: Swing and Sing into Summer on Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m. This event combines two popular requests – a Rage Room "swing" and Karaoke Studio "sing." The fee includes access to both activities as well as pizza, unlimited pop, and transportation from the Community Center.

At the Nature Center on Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m., participants can learn how to extend their growing season by creating their own mini-greenhouse using simple materials. On Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m., hands-on activities such as seed sorting and mud painting will allow attendees to experience the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of spring. And on Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m., participants can test their skills in shelter building, knot tying, and safe fire-starting demonstrations.

The Senior Center will also be hosting a variety of events throughout the month. On Wednesday, April 15 at 10:30 a.m., a workshop on addressing common behavior changes will be held. On Monday, April 20 at 5 p.m., the Bocce Barn will open for the season and offer a fun space for residents and non-residents of all ages to enjoy yard games such as bocce, cornhole, and ladder ball. And on Wednesday, April 22 at 9:30 a.m., staff from the Sterling Heights Public Library will be available to assist seniors with any tech questions they may have.

In addition to these events, the Parks & Recreation department has also announced several other news updates related to upcoming events and activities. These include building closures from March 10-11 and March 01-02 for maintenance purposes, as well as updates on future events such as the opening of the Bocce Barn on February 10 and an electronic device assistance session on January 26.
