State of Colorado Joins Lawsuit Against U.S. Department of Education Demanding Critical Education Funds Be Restored
EntSun News/11065118
DENVER - Today, the State of Colorado joined a coalition of other states in filing a lawsuit demanding that the U.S. Department of Education do its job to obligate congressionally-appropriated funding to support students, families, and educators. This harmful and illegal funding freeze comes after many Colorado schools have already finalized their budgets, causing more uncertainty for schools, students, and teachers. School districts rely on this funding, derived from various federal laws, to improve educator effectiveness, ensure students have access to safe and enriching academic settings all year long, and support migratory children and English language learners. Without this funding, schools will face serious financial pressure in the coming school year and students will suffer the consequences.
"It is absolutely absurd that the United States Department of Education is attempting to freeze education funding, obligated by Congress, to our state. This is devastating for educators, students, and families across Colorado who rely on these critical services such as afterschool care and language courses to make it through day-to-day life. Colorado schools and families face enormous uncertainty as the Trump Administration continues to play politics, violate the law, and refuse to prioritize the needs of Americans and what is best for families . In Colorado, we will not back down from the fight and we will continue to make sure that every student and educator has the resources they need to succeed," said Governor Polis.

Last week, Governor Polis met with Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Tracy Dorland, Lake County Superintendent Kate Bartlett, Colorado Department of Education CFO Wayne Peel, Denver Public Schools Chief of Academics Simone Wright, Colorado Association of School Executives Director Melissa Gibson, Colorado educators, and the Executive Director of the Colorado Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs to discuss the serious impacts that withholding this funding will have on teachers, students and schools around the state, including after school programs that so many families rely on. The message was clear: withholding these funds hurts students and schools.
