Springfield: SPD Honors Graduates of 2019 Citizens Police Academy

~ On October 17, 2019, the Springfield Police Department (SPD) held a ceremony to honor the 25 graduates of the 2019 Citizens Police Academy. The academy, which aims to give citizens a better understanding of how the police department functions and the challenges officers face while serving the community, required participants to complete 30 hours of instruction over 11 weeks.

The course covered a wide range of topics including police policies, crime scene processing, defensive tactics, use of firearms, and organizational structure within the department. The graduates were listed in alphabetical order as Fredrick (Fred) Ackley, Tom Bauer, Stacey Boyce, James (Jim) Brennecke, Walter Burk, Larry Crabb, Arthur Dixon, Rebecca (Becca) Fleming, Johnna (Jill) Gregory, Merleene Knapton, Courtney McCallister, Patricia (Maggie) Megalynn, April Miller, Gerrit Nibbelink, Daniel Ogunyemi, Juliette Ortiz, Joan Petty, Elissa Pineiro, Debbie Prothero,Marcia Smith,Tammy Thompson,Marcy VanDeBerg,Michele White-Ortiz,and Barbara Wolfe.

In order to graduate from the academy and receive their certificates of completion from SPD Chief John Doe and Mayor Jane Smith,the participants had to successfully complete all requirements including attending all classes and passing a final exam. The SPD is now accepting applications for the 2020 class which will begin in the spring. Congratulations to all the graduates for their dedication and commitment to learning about law enforcement in their community.
