EntSun News/11101344
~ Spokane, WA - On August 27th, 2026, the Spokane Fire Department and Spokane police officers responded to a fire in the area of W. 3rd Ave and S. Maple St. The fire was reported to be located between train tracks and a gas station. According to Officer T. Leming, PIO, one caller provided a description of the male suspect and his clothing.
Upon arrival, SFD quickly extinguished the fire. However, upon further investigation, officers discovered that the suspect had attempted to light two other fires in the area before being unsuccessful with the one near the train tracks.
The witness who had called in the initial report was able to follow the suspect to a nearby parking lot of a downtown business. Police were able to locate and contact the suspect, who was identified as Jacob S. Brooks (29). Officers noticed that Brooks had soot on his face and burn holes in his shirt.

During a search incident to arrest, officers found a pink butane torch lighter on Brooks' person. Further evidence was obtained when another officer contacted an employee at a nearby gas station and obtained video footage of Brooks starting the fire in dry grass near the train tracks.
As a result, Brooks was arrested for Arson 2nd Degree and booked into Spokane County Jail. The Spokane Police Department has released three photos related to this incident (see photos 1-3). The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine any potential motives for Brooks' actions.
