South Bend: Colfax Avenue Streetscape Project Construction Update
EntSun News/11100667
August 25, 2026 ~ As the city of South Bend continues to make improvements to its infrastructure, residents can expect some temporary changes to their daily commute. According to a press release issued on August 25, 2026, milling and paving work has begun on Colfax Avenue between the East Bank Trail and Eddy Street.
While the street will remain open during this time, there will be restrictions in the construction zone. The paving is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Thursday, August 27, weather permitting. Once the pavement striping is finished, Colfax Avenue between Niles Avenue and Eddy Street will reopen to full traffic by Tuesday, September 1.
In addition to this ongoing work, there is also a project underway at Gintz Drive approach just west of Stephenson Mills Apartments. This work is scheduled to be completed within this week. Once finished, the Colfax Avenue Streetscape Project will move into Phase Two which includes construction between Sycamore Street and Gintz Drive. During this phase, access to Stephenson Mills Apartments and The Cascades will be maintained from the east. It is expected that Phase Two will be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.

The improvements being made on Colfax Avenue include a new multi-purpose path, new traffic signals, new sidewalks, raised intersections at Niles Avenue and Sycamore Street, a raised crossing at the East Race Trail, decorative lighting and trees.
In addition to these ongoing projects, St. Joseph County has announced plans for a separate project starting on Monday, August 31. This project involves rebuilding the Colfax Avenue bridge over the St. Joseph River and also includes work at the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
As these projects continue throughout South Bend's streetscape improvement plan, residents are reminded to use caution while traveling through these areas and plan for potential delays in their daily commute.
