Sign Up for Mesa Library Summer Reading Program

EntSun News/11093129
~ Mesa Public Library is gearing up for an exciting summer with its annual summer reading program and a variety of related activities. As the Maricopa County Reads Program kicks off on June 1, the library is encouraging people of all ages to participate and read for at least 20 minutes a day.

The theme for this year's program is "Unearth a Story," which celebrates dinosaurs and encourages readers of all ages to explore the library, read books, win prizes, and have fun. Participants can register online now and earn points by reading and collecting secret codes at library events. The goal is to reach 1000 points by July 20, with every minute spent reading equaling one point.

According to Mesa Library Director Polly Bonnett, the goal of the summer reading program is to make reading enjoyable and accessible for everyone while also promoting family bonding through shared reading experiences. "Not only does summer reading help children maintain and strengthen their reading skills, but it also offers meaningful benefits for readers of all ages," she stated.

Participation in the Maricopa County Reads Program is especially important in combating the "Summer Slide" - a term used to describe the learning loss experienced by students during the transition between school years. Studies have shown that students who participate in a summer reading program have better reading skills at the end of third grade and score higher on standardized tests than those who do not. Additionally, summer reading loss can be cumulative, with children who consistently lose skills over the summer falling two years behind their peers by sixth grade. However, simply reading five books over the summer can prevent this loss.

And on June 3 from 2pm-4pm, Main Library will offer dinosaur-themed arts and crafts activities.

Participants can also visit mesalibrary.org/summerreading for more information on prizes and to register for the program. Prizes will be awarded at various point levels, including restaurant coupons, Arizona State Parks passes, Phoenix Mercury tickets, and free books.
