Opening Colorado's New Medical School: Governor Polis Cuts Ribbon for New College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Northern Colorado

GREELEY ~ In a momentous event, Governor Jared Polis celebrated the grand opening of Colorado's third medical school, the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) College of Osteopathic Medicine. The ceremony was attended by UNC President Andy Feinstein, founding Dean Beth Longenecker, UNC leaders, and members of the community.

The new medical school will play a crucial role in addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals across the country. With 81 students set to begin classes next week, it will train the next generation of doctors and healthcare professionals. Governor Polis expressed his pride in signing legislation that made this new medical school a reality, attracting students from all over. More than half of the incoming students are Colorado residents.

The establishment of this medical school is a significant step towards strengthening Colorado's healthcare workforce and ensuring access to well-trained professionals for all Coloradans. Two years ago, Governor Polis signed HB24-1231, which allocated $247 million to support four institutions of higher education in the state. This bipartisan law aimed to bolster the state's healthcare workforce and provide support for students and caregivers.

Out of this funding, $128 million was specifically designated for the construction of the new UNC medical school. The Polis Administration has been committed to investing in Colorado's healthcare workforce and creating pathways for careers in healthcare. In 2025, Governor Polis announced that over 10,000 healthcare professionals in Colorado had received free training through technical or community colleges under Care Forward Colorado.

This initiative has produced impressive results with over 2,600 Certified Nursing Assistants, 3,500 Emergency Medical Technicians, and 1,100 Medical Assistants being awarded certifications. Early employment data shows that more than 90% of these graduates are now employed in various healthcare roles across Colorado. This has helped address critical workforce gaps in communities throughout the state.

The grand opening of the UNC College of Osteopathic Medicine marks a significant milestone in Colorado's efforts to strengthen its healthcare workforce and provide high-quality care for all its residents.
