New Study Finds UK VPN Searches Up 172% as Social Media Rules Renew Privacy Concerns

FindCheapVPNs research shows UK VPN interest has risen 172% from its recent average
HALIFAX, U.K. - EntSun -- UK interest in virtual private networks has risen sharply following the government's confirmation of proposed social media restrictions for children under 16, according to new research published by FindCheapVPNs.
The study analysed 53 weeks of UK Google Trends data alongside 270 monthly observations covering January 2004 to June 2026.
In the latest weekly data, the VPN search-interest index reached 34—172% above the preceding four-week average of 12.5. This was the highest weekly level since early August 2025.
The latest increase was significant but not the largest. The strongest rise occurred during July and August 2025, immediately after stricter online age checks came into force.
During the five weeks before that change, the average Google Trends index was 9. Over the following five weeks, from 20 July to 17 August, the average climbed to 47.4—an increase of approximately 427%. The weekly index reached its maximum score of 100 in the week beginning 27 July 2025.

Google Trends reports relative search interest rather than exact search volumes. A score of 100 represents the most popular point within the selected dataset. It does not mean there were 100 searches or that interest increased by 100%.
The separate 172% figure was calculated by comparing the latest score of 34 with the preceding four-week average of 12.5.
The long-term data shows how VPN interest has become a more established part of UK internet behaviour.
Average relative interest was 1.3 between 2004 and 2013, rising to 10.2 between 2014 and 2019. It increased again to 20.9 between 2020 and 2024, before reaching 46 between January 2025 and June 2026.
The research identified several turning points. Interest rose in November 2016 as the Investigatory Powers Act entered public debate and remained higher during 2020 as remote working expanded.
By contrast, the passage of the Online Safety Act in October 2023 did not produce a search spike. The strongest reaction came later, when age-check requirements began affecting access in July 2025.

Martin Needs, cybersecurity expert and lead writer at FindCheapVPNs, said the pattern suggests users react more strongly when regulations have an immediate practical effect.
"VPN searches should not automatically be treated as evidence of wrongdoing," Needs said.
"VPNs are also used by businesses, remote workers, travellers, journalists and consumers for legitimate privacy and security purposes."
The full report includes two interactive charts, methodology, major UK policy events, research limitations and practical security advice.
