Naples Airport automates delivery of real-time weather data, runway info to pilots

NAPLES, Fla. - EntSun -- Naples Airport has adopted a new automated system that broadcasts real-time weather data and airfield information to arriving and departing pilots.

The innovative Frequentis smartATIS system automatically generates an audio broadcast featuring real-time weather data from the Airport Surface Observing System (ASOS). Air traffic controllers at Naples Airport input operational updates, including runway configurations, taxiway closures, construction activity and recent wildlife advisories.

Pilots nationally rely on audio recordings through an Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) to safely navigate airspace and the airfield. Recordings help brief pilots while minimizing the time that air traffic controllers spend repeating airport and weather information to each aircraft. Because pilots must access ATIS information before contacting the control tower at Naples Airport, the program reduces radio frequency congestion and ensures every pilot has access to the same, accurate information.

Previously, air traffic controllers at Naples Airport would manually update information and record new ATIS messages each hour. Implementing smartATIS allows controllers to generate a new message with the press of a button. Automating what was previously a manual process lets controllers spend less time recording routine information and more time focusing on aircraft movement, efficiency and safety. Messages are updated at least once per hour, and communications are more frequent as weather and operating conditions change.

"smartATIS has significantly reduced the amount of time we spend recording and updating our ATIS broadcasts," said Todd Colvin, air traffic manager at Naples FCT, the FAA-approved contractor that provides air traffic control services at Naples Airport. "The system eliminates the need to manually record and re-record voice announcements every hour, providing more consistent information for pilots while reducing controller workload during our busiest periods. That means we can spend less time managing routine broadcasts and more time focused on safely moving aircraft on the ground and in the air. It improves efficiency, helps ensure pilots receive current information and allows us to concentrate on what matters most – safety."

The Naples Airport Authority funded the addition of smartATIS as part of its mission to operate a safe, efficient airport. The airport generates its funding primarily through fuel sales, hangar leases and other user-based services; it receives no local taxpayer support for operations.

In 2025, Naples Airport reported 125,926 total aircraft operations.
