Naperville Police Arrest Knife Wielding Man
EntSun News/11099802
~ Naperville, IL- On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, at approximately 2:03 p.m., the Naperville Emergency Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a man brandishing a machete-style knife in a threatening manner outside a multi-unit residential building on the 300 block of N. Charles Avenue.
According to reports from the Naperville Police Department, numerous officers responded to the scene and discovered that the suspect, identified as Daniel O'Neill, 35, had allegedly advanced on two building employees while armed with a machete. The victims were able to escape into a maintenance room where they sought shelter.
However, O'Neill reportedly pursued them and attempted to gain entry by striking the door with his weapon. Despite his efforts, he was unable to enter and eventually retreated back into his apartment where he barricaded himself for several hours.
As officers attempted to communicate with O'Neill, he refused to respond. In response to the tense situation, trained crisis negotiators were called in along with members of the Naperville Police Department's Special Response Team.

After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations, authorities devised a tactical plan which included deploying a drone into O'Neill's apartment. However, he allegedly disabled the drone and threw it out of his window causing damage.
Eventually, officers deployed a distraction device which prompted O'Neill to exit his apartment and surrender without further incident. No injuries were reported during the ordeal and O'Neill was taken into custody and transported to the police department.
He now faces multiple charges including Criminal Damage to Government Supported Property (Class 3 felony), two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Class A misdemeanor), Reckless Conduct (Class A misdemeanor), Criminal Damage to Property (Class A misdemeanor), and Disorderly Conduct (Class C misdemeanor).
The Naperville Police Department is urging anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and contact their Investigations Division at (630) 548-2955 or NapervilleCrimeTips@naperville.il.us.
It is important to note that all charges against O'Neill are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Naperville Police Department also reminds the public and the media to respect this presumption of innocence.
