Naperville: Construction Commences on North Central College Riverwalk Park
EntSun News/11094966
NAPERVILLE, Ill. ~ Naperville, Illinois - The City of Naperville, in partnership with North Central College and the Naperville Park District, has announced plans to transform the property at 430 S. Washington St. into North Central College Riverwalk Park. This project is a result of a 2015 agreement between the City and the college and is part of both the College's 2024 Master Land Use Plan and Naperville's Riverwalk 2031 Master Plan.
The property, currently owned by North Central College - Naperville's University, is located on the east side of Washington Street across from Fredenhagen Park. The goal of this project is to close a gap in the Riverwalk system, improve accessibility, and create an inviting gathering space that celebrates the academic and athletic achievements of North Central College.
Upon completion, North Central College Riverwalk Park will connect the south extension of the Riverwalk path, Washington Street, Fredenhagen Park, and the North Central College campus via the Moser Covered Bridge. The park will feature a North Central College illuminated archway sign at its entrance to increase visibility along Washington Street. A plaza will also be included to highlight important milestones in the college's history.

In addition to these features, barrier-free pathways that meet ADA standards will be installed for easy accessibility. Benches and seat walls will provide seating options for visitors while native landscaping will enhance the natural beauty of the area. Lighting will also be installed to allow for evening use of the park and provide panoramic views of Fredenhagen Park and the college campus.
"We are very excited to move forward with the construction of North Central College Riverwalk Park," said TED Deputy Director Andy Hynes. "This park will provide a new gateway for the college as well as extend the low-flow walkway from the recently completed Washington Street Bridge to Moser Covered Bridge."
Dr. Abiódún Gòkè-Pariolá, president of North Central College, expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the City of Naperville and the Naperville Park District. "The start of this project marks the realization of a vision the college had when it first purchased the property more than a decade ago," he said. "This is a wonderful example of public-private collaboration that will benefit the entire community."
