EntSun News/11065334
~ Spokane, WA - On Tuesday morning, the Spokane Fire Department responded to reports of a fire on the 1700 block of East Hartson Avenue. According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, the call came in at approximately 10:52 a.m. and crews were dispatched immediately.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a wind- and slope-driven fire that was quickly spreading uphill. One structure was immediately threatened by the flames. Recognizing the potential for escalation, incident commanders wasted no time in requesting additional support from Spokane County Fire District 8, Spokane Valley Fire Department, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Thanks to a coordinated effort from multiple agencies, the initial fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. Crews then began mopping up hot spots. However, during this phase, nearby residents alerted firefighters to a second fire in the backyard of a home on East 8th Avenue.

Firefighters swiftly redirected their efforts to the new location and discovered flames spreading across two residential backyards. The blaze posed an immediate threat to a home and shed. Fortunately, crews were able to contain the fire and prevent further property damage.

According to de Ruyter, embers from the initial hillside blaze are believed to have caused the second fire. The incident is still under investigation and Spokane Police were called to interview two individuals who were reportedly seen in the area at the time by neighbors.

Thankfully, there were no reported injuries and damage was limited to fences and debris. However, this serves as a reminder for residents about the ongoing risk that embers from even distant fires can pose to urban neighborhoods.

The Spokane Fire Department urges residents to take precautions and visit the Department of Natural Resources Wildfire Ready website for information on how to safeguard their homes and properties.

Attached photos show the extent of damage caused by both fires. The first photo shows firefighters battling flames on the hillside, while the second photo shows the aftermath of the fire in the backyard of a home.
