A separate standard, ANSI/BIFMA X5.11, published in 2015, applies the same style of testing for users between 253 lb and 400 lb. Above 400 lb there is no common third-party standard for office seating, which means every 500 lb rating on the market is a manufacturer's own claim.

Outside office seating the picture is thinner. Ladders and step stools carry ANSI duty ratings up to 375 lb. Beds, recliners, sofas and most outdoor furniture have no widely used capacity standard, so the published limit is whatever the manufacturer chose to print.

The guide gives buyers a four-step check for any capacity claim: look for a named test standard, confirm the number on the manufacturer's own site and not only the retail listing, read the frame warranty, and leave headroom between body weight and the rating. It also explains the difference between static load tests and the cyclic durability tests that better predict how a chair holds up over years of use.
