By Simply Expanding An Existing Federal Program, Congress Could Slash Costs

WASHINGTON - EntSun -- More Americans are reportedly (https://www.axios.com/2026/03/12/healthcare-cos...) suffering from ever escalating medical care costs, with 26% (almost 70 million) having to postpone needed surgical or medical treatment, almost 30% having to forego a vacation, 18% not being able to afford to move to a new job, and almost 10% of older American unable to retire.

Meanwhile, Newsweek (https://www.newsweek.com/medicare-warning-premi...) says that Medicare premiums are set to double

But a simple and tested concept - one previously adopted by Congress, and championed by the nation's state health insurance commissioners - would slash medical care costs, argues public interest law professor John Banzhaf.

Instead of fighting over who should bear these astronomical and ever growing health insurance costs - those who seek subsidized medical treatment, other taxpayers, those with private health insurance - we should be asking why the medical costs are so outrageously high, and what can and should be done to substantially reduce them so that everyone pays much less; not only for Obamacare subsidies, but also under Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits, and many other government programs, as well as for private health insurance, says Banzhaf.

Fortunately, there is an easy and proven way to slash unnecessary health care costs simply by doing what politicians from both parties have been promising for many years but never followed through on: imposing personal responsibility.

We should begin imposing some personal responsibility on the tiny minority of Americans responsible for more than half of the costs of Medicaid, and far too much of the costs of Medicare and private health insurance, says the man whose legal actions have already saved millions of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars in unnecessary medical care expenses by banning cigarette commercials. . . .
