Mesa Police Department Statement - Concerns Over Federal Agency Presence
EntSun News/11082778
~ Mesa, Arizona - The Mesa Police Department has released a statement reaffirming their commitment to working with the community to promote public safety and protect individual rights. As concerns arise about the presence of outside agencies, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or U.S. military personnel, the department aims to clarify the role of their officers and the scope of their operations.
According to the statement, Mesa PD officers always identify themselves while on duty and do not wear full-face coverings when responding to calls or conducting enforcement. Their uniforms also display visible identifiers, such as department-issued badges or markings, appropriate to their assignment.
It is important for community members to know that Mesa PD officers do not participate in immigration-related enforcement operations within the community. This includes activities at businesses, on streets, or in neighborhoods. If anyone encounters someone claiming to be a Mesa PD officer who refuses to identify themselves or lacks visible department markings, they are advised to call 911 immediately if it is happening at that moment. For non-emergency concerns, they can contact the Mesa Police Department's non-emergency line at 480-644-2211.

The department also clarifies that they do not enforce federal immigration laws and their responsibility is solely focused on upholding Arizona state and local laws while protecting public safety. Although they have a jail-enforcement model agreement with ICE, any contact with ICE only occurs after an individual has been arrested for violating state law.
Mesa PD emphasizes that they cannot interrupt or interfere with federal law enforcement operations as it would be a violation of federal law. However, they do collaborate with federal partners on serious criminal investigations related to violent crime, trafficking, and exploitation of children and vulnerable individuals. These partnerships are conducted within clearly defined roles and with respect for constitutional rights.
The statement also addresses recent protests in the community and states that while the department supports individuals' right to peacefully express their views, they will not tolerate criminal behavior, violence, or actions that put people or property at risk. Their focus remains on safeguarding the community, protecting constitutional rights, and maintaining public trust through lawful and professional policing.
The Mesa Police Department urges the community to continue working together with them to achieve a safe and resilient community. By promoting professionalism, transparency, and respect, they believe that a strong partnership between law enforcement and the people they serve is crucial in achieving this goal.
