~ Mesa Arts Center will mark the 20th anniversary of its Día de los Muertos Festival with a two-day celebration in downtown Mesa on Oct. 24 and 25.
The free festival will run from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. A Relaxed Hour, intended to offer a more accessible experience, will take place both days from 11 a.m. to noon.
Saturday's program includes an expanded evening street party on First Avenue, with performances by QVLN (Quetzal Guerrero) at 7 p.m. and Lila Downs at 8 p.m. Downs, a multiple GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY Award-winning artist, draws on traditional Mexican music as well as jazz, folk, cumbia and contemporary influences, according to the arts center.
The street party will follow the lighting of the Community Altar, where attendees can leave photographs and mementos honoring loved ones who have died. Most Mercado vendors and daytime festival activities will conclude at 7 p.m., the center said.
