Medicare Enrollment Freeze Underscores Need for Hospital-Grade Home Equipment, SonderCare Says

As CMS implements a six-month moratorium on new home health and hospice provider enrollments, SonderCare urges families to prioritize quality home care equipment as a stable foundation for long-term care continuity.

O FALLON, Mo. - EntSun -- CMS has paused new Medicare enrollment for home health agencies and hospices for six months. SonderCare says families can strengthen continuity of care by investing in a safe, reliable home care environment.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented a six-month nationwide moratorium on May 13, 2026, blocking new home health agencies and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare while federal officials intensify fraud investigations.

The moratorium applies to initial Medicare enrollment applications and certain changes in majority ownership. Existing enrolled providers are not affected and may continue serving Medicare beneficiaries.

CMS says the action is intended to curb fraud in a rapidly expanding sector. In announcing the move, CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the agency had identified "systemic and deeply troubling fraud" involving vulnerable Medicare patients and taxpayer funds.

For families planning care at home, SonderCare says the regulatory pause underscores the importance of creating a dependable care environment that does not rely solely on provider availability.

"When the systems around home care face uncertainty, families need to know there's something solid at the center of the care environment," said Ben Martin, President of SonderCare. "A hospital-grade bed that's safe, reliable, and built for real care needs is there every day, regardless of what's happening in the broader healthcare landscape."

SonderCare's Aura home hospital beds are designed to bring advanced care functionality into residential settings. Features include FallSafe ultra-low positioning, which lowers the sleep platform to approximately 10 inches from the floor, along with hi-low adjustment and positioning options including Zero Gravity, Cardiac Chair, Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg.

The Aura Premium Hospital Bed starts at $6,999 and includes the full positioning suite and a 500 lb capacity. The Aura Platinum, priced from $8,499, adds upholstered side panels designed to blend more naturally into the home. The Aura Companion Bed, priced from $12,999, uses a split-king configuration so couples can remain side by side while each side operates independently.

"Home care starts with the environment," Martin said. "When a family can create a safe, properly equipped space, they gain stability that holds even when circumstances around them change."

SonderCare offers white-glove delivery and professional installation, with expedited and rush options available for urgent care needs.

The CMS moratorium is scheduled to remain in effect for six months from May 13, 2026, unless extended. Existing Medicare-enrolled home health agencies and hospices can continue participating during the moratorium.
