CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Launches Partnership to Provide Transportation Assistance for Seniors Affected by Grocery Store Closures

In response to recent grocery store closures on the South and West Sides of Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced a new partnership with Lyft, United Way of Metro Chicago, and 211 Metro Chicago. This collaboration aims to provide transportation assistance for eligible seniors who have been impacted by the closures.

According to Mayor Johnson, the closures have created significant challenges for many seniors in the affected communities. While this program is not a long-term solution, it will offer immediate relief by helping eligible older adults access essential destinations such as grocery stores.

The initiative will provide up to two $25 Lyft ride credits, totaling $50, for eligible seniors to use for transportation to grocery stores and other essential locations. This immediate relief is crucial as the Johnson administration continues working on long-term solutions to strengthen food access in affected communities.

Lyft Public Policy Manager Arielle Maffei expressed their commitment to serving and connecting communities. She stated that when the City of Chicago reached out for help, they quickly mobilized with their partners at United Way of Metro Chicago and 211 Metro Chicago to make it as simple as possible. Maffei also emphasized their gratitude for being able to support the communities where they live and work.

United Way of Metro Chicago Chief Programs Officer Jackie Rosa also expressed her organization's gratitude for being part of this partnership. She highlighted how this collaboration demonstrates the power of working together to strengthen communities and improve quality of life for all residents.

The program will distribute 1,000 Lyft ride codes valued at $25 each until September 30th or until the full $25,000 award from Lyft is spent. Eligible seniors can receive up to two codes for a total value of $50.

To qualify for this assistance, residents must be 60 years or older and live in one of nine specific ZIP codes in Chicago's South and West Sides. They must also download and use the Lyft app to redeem the ride credit.

Eligible seniors can call 2-1-1 between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to request transportation assistance and complete a brief eligibility screening. A 2-1-1 Resource Navigator will assist seniors with downloading the Lyft app, redeeming their ride code, and booking a ride. Caregivers are also allowed to help seniors with using the app and can accompany them on rides.

Residents in need of transportation assistance or other food resources can access help by calling 2-1-1, texting their ZIP code to 898-211, or visiting 211MetroChicago.org.

This partnership is part of the Johnson administration's broader response to recent grocery store closures and ongoing efforts to ensure residents have access to healthy food, essential services, and necessary resources for thriving.

211 Metro Chicago is operated by United Way of Metro Chicago in partnership with the City of Chicago and Cook County. It is a free helpline available 24/7/365 that connects Cook County residents with critical resources such as food access, stable housing, healthcare, utility payment assistance, and more.

Mayor Johnson's partnership with Lyft, United Way of Metro Chicago, and 211 Metro Chicago demonstrates a united effort to support vulnerable seniors during this challenging time.
