Chicago ~ Chicago Mayor and Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Recognize National Consumer Protection Week with Free Resources and Webinars
Chicago, IL - In an effort to promote ethical business practices and protect consumers, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) are recognizing National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW) from March 1st to March 7th. This nationwide initiative aims to educate residents about their rights, prevent scams, and support businesses in complying with local and state consumer protection laws.
Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of trust and transparency in building strong communities. He stated, "My administration is committed to protecting residents from fraud and unfair practices while supporting businesses that operate with integrity. When consumers understand their rights and businesses understand their responsibilities, our entire local economy benefits."
BACP Commissioner Ivan Capifali also highlighted the role of informed consumers and compliant businesses in creating a stronger local economy. He stated, "Our goal during National Consumer Protection Week, and year-round, is to provide both residents and business owners with the tools and resources they need to succeed while ensuring fairness and accountability in the marketplace."

The Federal Trade Commission is sponsoring NCPW, which brings together public and private sector organizations to educate people about frauds, scams, and other threats. As part of their outreach efforts during NCPW, BACP will be hosting free webinars on various consumer protection topics such as how to outsmart fraudsters and spot common scams. Interested individuals can register for these webinars at Chicago.gov/BACPWebinars.
In addition to webinars, BACP will also be promoting their "Be Informed. Be Protected." campaign which provides tips for consumers on topics such as home repair and using towing services. The campaign materials are available in multiple languages on Chicago.gov/ConsumerProtection.
Another initiative being promoted by BACP during NCPW is the "Ride Smart Chicago" campaign, which provides safety and consumer awareness information for passengers of taxicabs, ride-hail services, and other public passenger vehicles. More information can be found at Chicago.gov/RideSmart.
Throughout the week, BACP will also be sharing consumer protection tips on their social media platforms using the hashtag #NCPW2026 to raise awareness. They will also continue to collaborate with organizations like the FTC and the Chicago Better Business Bureau to amplify educational materials and initiatives.

Steve Bernas, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau, expressed the importance of NCPW in protecting consumers from scams. He stated, "Together we take alerting consumers to protect them from the perils of the ever-growing variety of scams absolutely vital. We are always honored to team up with BACP in this effort with our yearly presentation of the Top 10 Local Scams, which will alert and hopefully prevent people from becoming targets of fraudsters."
In addition to these outreach efforts, BACP is responsible for enforcing Chicago's consumer protection laws. In 2025 alone, they responded to over 1,300 consumer fraud complaints with home repair and towing complaints being the most common. As a result of their efforts, BACP was able to retrieve over $270,000 in restitution for complainants.
BACP's main responsibility is to protect Chicagoans from acts of consumer fraud, unfair methods of competition, and deceptive practices. This includes any conduct that violates business operations or consumer protection laws under the Municipal Code or Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
