AI Can Help Prevent Inevitable Catastrophe at Little Cost NOW - Experts

WASHINGTON - EntSun -- More than 300 passengers could have lost their lives in a deadly crash at Logan Airport on Friday.  This is only the latest in a growing number of near deadly collisions, and a few fatal ones; but they could have been prevented at very little cost, claims an expert,

Such deadly collisions and other potentially-deadly near misses could have been prevented by using computers equipped with existing AI programs to monitor air-to-ground radio communications as well as radar, and then provide air traffic controllers in control towers with alerts to any situations when two planes might fly too close to one another, or come dangerously close during takeoffs or landings, says Professor John Banzhaf of George Washington University.

Using AI in different forms to reduce actual airplane collisions, as well as the escalating number of potentially-fatal near misses was never even evaluated while the FAA  reportedly spent some $80 billion promoting diversity rather than air traffic safety,

An already-available desktop computer using a modern AI program could provide a significant increase in air traffic safety - like having a lightning-fast genius providing instant real-time warnings - claims Banzhaf.

While it would be far from a complete solution to the current emergency, it would provide a significant additional margin of safety until longer range solutions can be put in place, he says.

It would be like having an ever-vigilant and indefatigable genius, who can project scenarios and provide warnings of potential collisions in milliseconds, looking over the shoulders of very busy controllers in airport towers.

Professor Banzhaf's detailed analysis has been featured in many forms on the Internet, including, for example:
