Lightning Sparks 100-Acre Grain Field Fire North of Idaho Falls

Lightning Sparks 100 ~ Idaho Falls, July 30, 2026 - A lightning strike caused a massive fire in a grain field north of Idaho Falls this evening, resulting in an estimated loss of $100,000 in crops. The Idaho Falls Fire Department was quick to respond to the emergency and worked alongside the Ucon Fire Department and Central Fire District to bring the fire under control.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:48 p.m. when crews were dispatched to a field fire near 129th North. The lightning strike, which was part of passing storms, ignited the dry vegetation and quickly spread through the standing grain field. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it could cause any further damage.

A unified command was established between personnel from Idaho Falls Fire Department and Ucon Fire Department to coordinate their efforts in suppressing the fire. Along with fire apparatus, two tractors equipped with discs were also used to create fire breaks and prevent the flames from spreading.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department would like to remind residents that lightning can easily start fires in dry conditions and urges them to report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 911 immediately. This incident serves as a reminder for everyone to be cautious during hot and dry weather conditions.
