Kingsford® Announces Pass The Tongs, a National HBCU Partnership to Empower the Next Generation of Barbecue Culture

OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 13, 2025 ~ Kingsford®, the iconic brand known for its American barbecue, has announced a new initiative called Pass The Tongs. This program aims to highlight and celebrate Black grilling traditions while empowering the next generation of grillers through culture, education, and connection.

The launch of Pass The Tongs took place in Atlanta, marking the next chapter in Kingsford's ongoing mission to preserve tradition, foster connection, and support future changemakers. Since 2021, Kingsford has invested over $355,000 into the barbecue community through its Preserve the Pit initiative. This includes providing mentorship to 15 barbecue entrepreneurs, monetary grants, and resources to 35 barbecue businesses across the country. Through partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and local community organizations, Pass The Tongs will showcase stories, traditions, and flavors that have shaped generations.

Mitch O'Furey, Marketing Director at Kingsford stated that grilling is more than just a skill; it is a tradition that brings generations and communities together. With Pass The Tongs, they are not only celebrating the past but also fueling the future by empowering emerging innovators and storytellers who carry on this legacy.

As a key part of this initiative, Kingsford has teamed up with Morehouse College to facilitate meaningful discussions and enhance fall programming. This collaboration aims to create interactive experiences on campus that will inspire students, alumni, and unite the wider community through their shared love for barbecue.

Katina Henderson-Hawkins, Director of Event Sponsorships at Morehouse College expressed excitement about partnering with Kingsford. She believes that their commitment to uplifting students aligns perfectly with Morehouse's mission. Pass The Tongs presents a unique opportunity to support their student body as they work towards nurturing the next generation of leaders.

Pass The Tongs will come alive through a series of flavorful events across Atlanta. It kicked off with a lively Greek grill-off and smokehouse sampling at the Atlanta Greek Picnic. The upcoming schedule includes a curated grill tasting event, live music, and a fireside chat at Morehouse College on August 27. This event will feature celebrity chef Way, student moderator Isaiah Evans (HBCU Buzz's Top HBCU Host of 2025), and actress Gail Bean, founder of Dream Above The Influence. The conversation will explore the tradition and importance of cultural preservation through the lens of barbecue heritage.

On August 30, Taste of Soul Atlanta will offer an elevated culinary tasting trail at the Home Depot Backyard. This event will showcase regional barbecue styles and celebrate the rich traditions of culinary heritage with expertly curated flavors and memorable tasting moments. And on October 18, Pass The Tongs will be part of Morehouse's Homecoming celebrations. This immersive cookout experience will include hands-on grilling stations, dynamic culture trivia, and special appearances by celebrity pitmaster and Preserve the Pit alum Pat Neely.

Pass The Tongs events offer students, Atlantans, and visitors exciting opportunities to immerse themselves in authentic barbecue culture. Through these events, Kingsford hopes to spark connection, celebration, and community pride.
