Juneau: Marie Drake Gym Open House and Public Programming Begins September

~ Juneau, Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation department has announced the exciting news that the Marie Drake Gym will be opening its doors to the public this September. The community is invited to attend an open house on Friday, September 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gym and planetarium located at 1415 Glacier Ave.

The open house will give families the opportunity to explore the new gym space and experience the nonprofit-run Marie Drake Planetarium. This event marks the beginning of a new season for the gym, which will officially open on Tuesday, September 8. The space will be utilized for various public programming, youth sports, private rentals, and by user groups who previously used the Mt. Jumbo Gym.

Private rentals for parties after September 11 are now being accepted at the Marie Drake Gym. This transition also means that the Mt. Jumbo Gym on Douglas will be closing its doors.

One of the new programs being offered at Marie Drake is Open Gym, which will begin on September 14. This program will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., providing a space for all ages to enjoy drop-in activities such as pickleball, ping-pong, and cornhole. Additionally, Preschool Open Gym sessions will start on September 8 with sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The cost for Preschool Open Gym sessions is $6 per child with no charge for parents or guardians or infants under six months old. Turf for Tots passes are also accepted. Open Gym costs $6 per person.

To support these new programs at both Marie Drake and Floyd Dryden gyms, Parks & Recreation is currently recruiting Recreation Workers. Interested individuals can visit their job posting for more information and to apply.

Public parking will be available at the Marie Drake Gym on the new compacted surface by the main entrance. However, participants will need to validate their parking with the gym monitor upon arrival on weekdays to avoid being ticketed.

The season for programming at Marie Drake Gym will end on April 30, 2027, and will resume again in the following fall. Similar to other CBJ Parks facilities, the gym will be closed on holidays including Christmas and New Year's.
