Join Springfield Police for Annual Coffee with A Cop

EntSun News/11065180
~ Springfield Police Department is inviting the community to join them for their annual Coffee with a Cop event on Wednesday, Oct. 2. This event, which will take place from 8-10 a.m., is part of the nationwide National Coffee with a Cop Day and aims to improve trust and build relationships between the police department and the citizens they serve.

Five McDonald's restaurants in Springfield will be hosting this event, providing an opportunity for community members to sit down with officers over a cup of coffee and engage in conversation. The participating McDonald's locations are 1607 E. Battlefield (Battlefield Mall), 4101 S. Campbell (Campbell Avenue and Republic Road), 3510 W. Chestnut (Chestnut Expressway and West Bypass), 2811 N. Kansas (Kansas Expressway and I-44), and 501 W. Sunshine (Sunshine and S. Campbell).

Police Chief Paul Williams expressed his excitement for this event, stating that it gives officers the chance to connect with citizens on a more personal level. He acknowledged that officers are often busy with their daily duties and may not have the opportunity to interact with community members in this way.

This initiative was inspired by the Hawthorne, California police department's efforts to find ways to successfully interact with their community members back in 2011. Chief Williams also shared that he has been hosting monthly Coffee with the Chief events since joining SPD in 2010 as a way to get to know the citizens of Springfield better and foster open communication between the department and its residents.

Initially planned for only one year, these events have now been going on for eight years thanks to encouragement from former City Council member. Chief Williams has met countless citizens over cups of coffee during these events, even expanding it to include a virtual option on Facebook.

The SPD's social media pages will provide updates on when the next Coffee with the Chief event will take place. In the meantime, the community is encouraged to join the officers for Coffee with a Cop on Oct. 2 and get to know the people behind the badges. This event is a great opportunity for citizens to ask questions, share their thoughts, and build relationships with their local police department.
