Idaho Falls Fiber Launches 2.5 Gig Internet Service
EntSun News/11100811
~ Idaho Falls Fiber, the municipally-owned fiber network, has announced the launch of its new 2.5 Gigabit (2.5Gbps) internet service for residential customers in Idaho Falls. This expansion of high-speed internet offerings aims to provide even faster speeds to households through the city's open-access fiber network.
With download and upload speeds of 2,500 Mbps, the 2.5 Gig service is designed for households with multiple connected devices, heavy internet usage, home offices, streaming, gaming, and large file transfers. Prices for this service start as low as $91.95 and can be found on Idaho Falls Fiber's website.
According to Chris Fredericksen, General Manager of Idaho Falls Power and Idaho Falls Fiber, this launch comes as a response to the changing technology and internet usage patterns among customers since the initial launch of their residential fiber pilot. He expressed excitement about investing in the network and providing customers with access to faster speeds while building on their existing infrastructure.
Unlike traditional internet networks where both infrastructure and services are provided by one company, Idaho Falls Fiber operates as an open-access network. The company owns and maintains the fiber infrastructure while allowing participating internet service providers to offer services directly to customers. This model gives residents the freedom to choose from available providers and service plans while allowing Idaho Falls Fiber to focus on expanding and maintaining the underlying infrastructure.

The citywide fiber network was completed in November 2024 after years of construction throughout Idaho Falls Power's service area. According to Fredericksen, this project aimed to leverage existing infrastructure owned by Idaho Falls to benefit the community. He believes that the continued growth of Idaho Falls Fiber is a testament to the long-term value of this investment.
The addition of 2.5 Gig service marks another milestone in Idaho Falls Fiber's evolution as customer demand for reliable high-speed internet continues to grow. "People are connecting more devices to their home networks than ever before," said Fredericksen. "Having a strong fiber connection gives customers the capacity they need today and a foundation for the future."
Customers can learn more about Idaho Falls Fiber, available service providers, and current internet plans on their website. With this new 2.5 Gig service, Idaho Falls Fiber is set to provide even faster and more reliable internet speeds to its residential customers, further solidifying its position as a leading provider in the area.
