Governor Newsom announces intent for California to sue Trump administration over latest attack on voting; new legislation introduced to defend democracy

~ SACRAMENTO - In response to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow the Trump administration to pursue its Executive Order related to mail-in ballots, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that California intends to sue the administration. This is just the latest attack on democracy by the Trump administration, and Governor Newsom is taking action to defend elections in California.

"The Supreme Court's ruling has given the green light for the Trump administration's plan to disenfranchise voters across the country," said Governor Newsom. "California will not stand for this and we will be suing again to block these Orwellian rules from being implemented."

In addition to announcing California's intent to sue, Governor Newsom also revealed new legislation that aims to safeguard the electoral process in the state. This legislation comes after earlier efforts by Governor Newsom and the California Legislature to protect elections from threats posed by President Trump and his allies.

The new proposals include AB 282 (Pellerin), which establishes two new felonies for anyone who seizes or causes the seizure of ballots, election records, or certified voting technology before election results are certified. The punishment for this offense can be up to three years in prison. The bill also prohibits anyone with authority from directing someone under their supervision to do the same, with a punishment of up to four years in prison.

Another bill, SB 259 (Wahab), creates a new felony punishable by up to four years in prison for anyone in a position of authority who directs someone under their supervision and authority to interfere with a ballot's delivery or return. It also adds a misdemeanor charge for anyone who interferes with delivering a vote-by-mail ballot.

This legislative package, known as "Election Protection," builds on lessons learned from recent attempts at interfering with election administration. It aims to make California have some of the strongest legal protections in the nation when it comes to safeguarding every lawful vote.

Governor Newsom and the California Legislature have also made significant investments in the state's election system. In the final budget, $29 million was allocated for increased staffing, technology upgrades, and equipment purchases for counties to speed up counting and increase capacity. An additional $5 million was designated for voter outreach and education at both the county and statewide levels, with an extra $750,000 to combat misinformation and disinformation.

These efforts build on Governor Newsom's legacy of defending democracy, as he has signed over 30 bills during his time in office related to this issue.

In other news, Governor Newsom announced that California has attracted more startup investment than all other 49 states combined. In 2026 alone, companies in California raised a total of $366 billion in venture capital funding. This is a testament to Governor Newsom's leadership and the state's thriving economy.

Additionally, Governor Newsom recently signed several bills into law, including AB 1651 by Assemblymember Diane Dixon (R-Newport Beach), which focuses on artificial intelligence within the State Bar of California. He also announced appointments to various positions within the state government, including Mike Marshall as State Chief Information Security Officer at the California Department of Technology.

Governor Newsom continues to prioritize defending democracy and promoting economic growth in California through his actions and legislation.
