Governor Abbott Tours Flood Damage, Provides Update On Texas' Response To Severe Flooding In Central Texas

~ Leander, Texas - Governor Greg Abbott visited Donald Lewis Hisle Elementary School today to receive a briefing and hold a press conference on the ongoing response to severe flooding in Central Texas. The Governor was joined by state and local officials, including Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd and Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director Marc Williams.

Prior to the briefing and press conference, Governor Abbott toured the damage at Sandy Creek Bridge and met with local first responders to express his gratitude for their service. "Our No. 1 job is always saving lives, protecting lives, and finding those who have lost their lives," said Governor Abbott. "That is a 24/7 operation that we are unrelenting in continuing to pursue. We as a state are going to be able to respond and recover from this. We are community. We are Texas strong."

During the press conference, Governor Abbott extended his deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones or been affected by the recent heavy rainfall and flooding. He also thanked the 25 states that have sent resources and personnel to support Texas' search and rescue efforts.

The Governor noted that 21 counties are included in his disaster declaration, allowing for increased deployment of state resources to assist with local response efforts. He also discussed plans for expedited restoration of infrastructure damaged by the storms, including designing new bridges to replace those washed away.

Governor Abbott's visit began in Leander where he toured Sandy Creek Bridge and met with volunteers, residents, and first responders who have been working tirelessly to remove debris and restore infrastructure. The residents expressed their gratitude for the swift response from the state and for the temporary bridge constructed by state and county personnel.

As other parts of the state brace for severe weather this week, Governor Abbott urged Texans to stay informed about weather conditions, create an emergency plan, and follow guidance from state and local officials in order to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
