Governor Abbott, Secretary Rollins Take Action To Protect Agriculture In South Texas
EntSun News/11084059
~ Governor Greg Abbott and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins made a joint visit to South Texas today to address the concerns of American farmers and ranchers. The two officials held a roundtable discussion in Mission with Texas agriculture producers to discuss the recent negotiations of the 1944 U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty and its impact on the state's citrus industry.
During the discussion, Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude to President Trump for taking proactive action in enforcing the treaty. He emphasized the urgency of ensuring that more water is allocated to those who grow crops in Texas. Secretary Rollins also acknowledged the negative impact that uncertainty over water deliveries from Mexico has on South Texas, and highlighted the efforts of the State Department, USDA, and International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) in negotiating with their Mexican counterparts.
The roundtable also touched upon Proposition 4, a generational investment in Texas' water infrastructure, which was recently passed. The Governor and Secretary were joined by Lone Star Citrus Growers President Jud Flowers, Lone Star Citrus Growers Vice President of Operations TJ Flowers, Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening, and other agricultural producers from Texas.

After the roundtable discussion, Governor Abbott and Secretary Rollins attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of a Domestic New World Screwworm (NWS) Sterile Fly Dispersal Facility in Edinburg. This facility will play a crucial role in combating the northward spread of NWS and protecting American livestock.
Governor Abbott commended President Trump for providing necessary resources to address this issue and stressed on America's commitment to take care of its own borders. Secretary Rollins echoed his sentiments and stated that this facility was a high priority project for the Trump Administration.
The Governor and Secretary were joined by U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary of Marketing & Regulatory Programs Dudley Hoskins, Congressman Tony Gonzales, Senator Adam Hinojosa, Representative Ryan Guillen, Representative Stan Kitzman, Representative Janie Lopez, Representative Don McLaughlin, and Nate's Honey Founder Nate Sheets at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Governor Abbott has been taking preemptive action against the northward spread of NWS by issuing a statewide disaster declaration, announcing a $750 million investment in a new Domestic Sterile Screwworm Production Facility, and directing the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) to establish a joint Texas New World Screwworm Response Team.
The Governor and Secretary's visit to South Texas highlights their commitment to addressing the concerns of American farmers and ranchers. They continue to work towards finding solutions to protect American agriculture from threats such as NWS.
