Governor Abbott Announces $138 Billion Texas Transportation Investment
EntSun News/11100790
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed a new 10-year transportation plan for the state of Texas. The plan, developed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), is projected to have a total investment of $138 billion and aims to improve safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen the supply chain.
According to Governor Abbott, the booming economy and growing population in Texas require a transportation system that can efficiently and safely move people and products. He believes that this significant investment will not only improve roadways but also support the growth of communities across the state. He stated, "By investing in critical infrastructure today, we are building a bigger, better Texas for generations to come."
The plan was developed in collaboration with transportation partners and took into consideration feedback from Texans. Acting Chair of the Texas Transportation Commission Alvin New expressed his gratitude towards Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature for their commitment to funding projects that will benefit the people of Texas. He stated, "These investments will improve mobility, enhance connectivity, and make our roads safer for everyone."

TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams emphasized that this 10-year plan reflects the scale and complexity of meeting transportation needs in one of the fastest-growing states in the nation. He added that it focuses on practical outcomes such as improving safety, preserving existing infrastructure, and supporting reliable movement for people and goods.
The 2027 Unified Transportation Program (UTP) was approved by the Texas Transportation Commission in August. It includes $95 billion in projected funding from existing state and federal revenue sources for various projects across the state over the next decade. An additional $43 billion will be allocated for development and routine maintenance.
The UTP outlines a comprehensive plan for project development that addresses safety concerns, congestion issues, connectivity improvements, and preservation of roadways for drivers in Texas. It also includes provisions for public transportation, maritime activities, aviation services, rail systems, freight movement, international trade, and bicycle and pedestrian connectivity.

Many of the projects included in the 2027 UTP are segments of roadways that have been identified as the 100 most congested in Texas. The plan also supports the Texas Clear Lanes congestion-relief projects, which have received increased funding to support a total investment of $90.6 billion for completed, under-construction, and planned non-tolled projects since 2015. Additionally, there is a significant focus on safety improvements and increased funding for rural corridors and key economic hubs.
For more information on the program, interested individuals can refer to the UTP Fact Sheet. The public involvement process and comments received can also be found on txdot.gov. With this new transportation plan in place, it is expected that Texas will continue to thrive and meet the demands of its growing population for years to come.
