Governor Abbott Activates Texas State Emergency Operations Center For New World Screwworm Response

~ In response to the recent threat of New World Screwworm in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to protect the state's ranchers, livestock producers, deer breeders, and economy. Today, he directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate the Texas State Emergency Operations Center (SOC) to Level II (Escalated Response).
Governor Abbott stated, "I have activated the full use of all state resources to respond to the New World Screwworm threat. The protection of our ranchers, livestock producers, deer breeders, and the Texas economy from this pest is a top priority." He also emphasized the importance of cooperation with federal partners in eradicating this pest.
Under the direction of Governor Abbott, TDEM has requested that representatives from various member agencies and partners of the Texas Emergency Management Council report to the SOC. These include the Texas Animal Health Commission, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, Texas Department of Agriculture, and Texas Department of State Health Services.

Texans are urged to stay alert and check their animals daily for any signs of wounds. Any suspected cases should be reported immediately to the appropriate agencies. Livestock cases can be reported to the Texas Animal Health Commission at 1-800-550-8242 while wildlife cases can be reported to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department at (512) 389-4505.
