Gov. Kemp Signs Legislation Strengthening Georgia's Workforce

ATLANTA ~ Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp, along with First Lady Marty Kemp and other state officials, signed multiple bills into law today in an effort to solidify Georgia's position as the Top State for Talent. The signing ceremony was attended by Speaker Jon Burns, Department of Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes, University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Sonny Perdue, Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Commissioner Greg Dozier, and Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) President Chris Green.
During the ceremony, Governor Kemp emphasized the importance of having a skilled and highly qualified workforce in order to attract businesses and promote economic growth in the state. He stated that these new laws will further strengthen Georgia's workforce and ensure that all Georgians have equal opportunities for success regardless of their zip code.
Lt. Governor Burt Jones also expressed his support for the efforts to grow and support Georgia's workforce. He highlighted the progress made in recent years to provide students with various opportunities for their future careers.

Governor Kemp signed seven pieces of legislation during the ceremony. One of these bills, SB 556 sponsored by Senator Chuck Payne, codifies the Georgia DREAMS Scholarship program under GSFC and allows fine arts courses to count towards a student's HOPE GPA. It also establishes a scholarship program for medical students and increases contributions to 529 Plans.
HB 1328 sponsored by Representative Will Wade allows additional candidates to receive a University of North Georgia military scholarship subject to available funding. HB 541 sponsored by Representative Katie Dempsey expands the Tuition Equalization Grant program for nursing students at accredited institutions.

SB 432 sponsored by Senate President Pro Tempore Larry Walker prevents tuition and other fees from lapsing annually through 2030. SB 553 sponsored by Senator Bo Hatchett aims to improve Georgia's regulatory environment by establishing clear pathways to licensure for certain construction industry professions.
HB 1254 sponsored by Representative Matt Reeves moves a number of licensing boards to the Secretary of State, in line with Governor Kemp's priority of regulatory reform. Lastly, HB 1302 sponsored by Representative Matt Gambill renames the Governor's Office of Student Achievement to the Office of Education and Workforce Strategy and empowers it to coordinate with relevant state agencies on workforce development initiatives.
