Glaucoma Research Foundation Appoints Cynthia Steel, PhD, as Chief Scientific Officer

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 13, 2025 ~ The Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) has announced the appointment of Cynthia Steel, PhD, MBA as their new Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), effective August 11, 2025. With a relationship spanning over a decade, Dr. Steel brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role.

According to Thomas M. Brunner, President and CEO of GRF, the organization is thrilled to have Dr. Steel join them in this leadership position as they expand their research investment and work towards their mission of curing glaucoma and restoring vision. He believes that her deep knowledge in translational research and drug development will be crucial in advancing real-world therapies for patients.

As CSO, Dr. Steel will be responsible for leading GRF's scientific programs, directing research strategy, assessing program impact, strengthening relationships with the global scientific community, and communicating complex research insights in an accessible manner for donors, patients, and stakeholders.

Expressing her excitement about joining the GRF team after years of collaboration, Dr. Steel stated that she is confident her expertise in translating laboratory discoveries into practical treatments for glaucoma will help shape the foundation's scientific trajectory. She also looks forward to guiding its vision for the future with scientific mission-driven leadership.

Dr. Steel is an accomplished vision scientist with a specialization in trabecular meshwork cell biology. She earned her PhD in Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy from Loyola University Chicago before completing an Executive MBA at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business.

In addition to her work at GRF, Dr. Steel has held scientific leadership roles at Bausch + Lomb, Qlaris Bio, and Glaukos where she applied her research expertise to drug development and commercialization. She will also continue to serve as a contracted Science, Engineering, and Technical Advisor for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).

With Dr. Steel's appointment, GRF is confident that they will be able to shape their scientific strategy and accelerate innovation in their efforts to find a cure for glaucoma and restore vision for those affected by the disease.
