Georgia: Governor Kemp Announces Relief for Taxpayers Impacted by Wildfires
EntSun News/11091715
ATLANTA ~ Governor Brian P. Kemp, along with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR), have announced an extension of certain return and payment deadlines for taxpayers affected by the Georgia Highway 82 Wildfire and the Pineland Road Wildfire in Clinch, Echols, and Brantley Counties.
The decision to extend these deadlines comes after Governor Kemp declared a State of Emergency for 91 counties, including Clinch, Echols, and Brantley, due to exceptional drought conditions and dry fuel posing a threat to citizens' safety and well-being. This declaration was made on April 22, 2026.
Governor Kemp expressed his gratitude towards the Trump administration for their support in providing relief to those impacted by the wildfires. He stated that no stone will be left unturned in helping families rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
State Revenue Commissioner David Burge also emphasized the importance of providing relief to affected individuals and businesses during their recovery process. He stated that these extensions will give them more time and flexibility to meet their tax obligations.

For federal taxes, taxpayers can refer to a release from the IRS for information on administrative relief. As for state tax relief, there are several extensions in place.
For sales and use taxes, the April returns and payments that were originally due on May 20 have now been extended to June 22. This extension also applies to monthly excise tax returns.
For income taxes, certain return and payment deadlines have been extended by up to 120 days. This includes taxpayers who had a valid extension until October 15, 2026, to file their individual or business income tax return for 2025. They now have until February 12, 2027, to file their return. However, any overdue payments related to these returns are not eligible for this relief as they were due on April 15, 2026.
The 120-day extension also applies to quarterly estimated income tax payments due on June 15, 2026 (now due October 13, 2026); quarterly payroll returns due on June 30, 2026 (now due October 28, 2026); calendar-year partnerships and S corporations whose extensions expire on October 15, 2026 (now due February 12, 2027); calendar-year corporations whose extensions expire on November 16, 2026 (now due March 16, 2027); and calendar-year tax-exempt organizations whose extensions expire on November 16, 2026 (now due March 16, 2027).

It is important to note that the extended deadlines do not apply to information returns in the W-2 and 1099 series; Forms1042-S; employment and excise tax deposits; or International Fuel Tax Agreement Interest or scheduled payments resulting from an Installment Payment Agreement.
Taxpayers filing paper returns should clearly write "Georgia Wildfires - Clinch, Echols, Brantley" at the top of their forms. This relief also applies to taxpayers outside of the disaster area but with records located within it. Additionally, all relief workers affiliated with a recognized government or philanthropic organization assisting in relief activities in the covered disaster area are eligible for this relief. This also includes individuals who were injured or killed while visiting the disaster area.
Any taxpayer who has been assessed a penalty and believes they did not receive proper consideration regarding the relief can contact DOR Headquarters at1-877-423-6711 for assistance or with any questions.
In conclusion, Governor Kemp and state officials are working towards providing support and assistance to those affected by the wildfires through these extended deadlines for tax returns and payments. They urge taxpayers to take advantage of these extensions if they have been impacted by the Georgia Highway Wildfire or Pineland Road Wildfire.
